Resources to help celebrate Rotary's new year

On 1 July, Rotary's new year began, ushering in new leaders, a new RI theme, and new goals.

In 2009-10, Rotarians welcome the new RI president, John Kenny. Rotarians already have shown enthusiastic support for Kenny's theme, The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands, which focuses on clubs' important role in shaping Rotary's future.

Here are a few resources on RI's Web site to help you start the new Rotary year.

It's painful to note that Nigeria still counts among Polio endemic areas. We lose a number of infants because we have complacently waited for the government. President John Kenny's call for all Rotarians to assist in the efforts to reduce child mortality, coupled with Bill & Melinda Gates' $200 Million Challenge; I BELIEVE THE END HAS TRULLY COME FOR POLIO Rotarians from all clubs, together with our spouses, children and friends should assist in disseminating information about the import of eradicating polio from the surface of the heart and ofcourse participate actively in NIPDs, SNIPDs etc. and also report threats.

At 11:27AM on 7 July 2008, Rtn Jess Cifra wrote: In the Philippines, very sadly, we lose a number of infants because they had fallen critically ill and breast milk which could have saved them was unfortunately lacking. As our sincere response to the call of R. I. Pres. D.K. Lee for Rotarians to assist in the efforts to reduce child mortality, the Rotary Club of Loyola Heights, RI D-3780, is therefore currently planning to refurbish the Human Milk Bank at the Philippine Children's Medical Center, where in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a number of patients continue to suffer from their ailments, aggravated by the unavailability of a steady supply of breast milk. We hope to be able to provide some of the equipment needed in sourcing, freezing and pasteurizing breast milk. Rotarians from our club, together with our spouses, children and friends will also assist in disseminating information about the value of breast milk and initiate a donation program for the Human Milk Bank. In these ways, we foresee a lower incidence of loss of the lives of children, giving them what may very well be their only chance to survive and, in the future, to have dreams of their own!
